According to La Segunda newspaper, Chilean researchers discovered a compound that may help combating alcoholism. The study led by Mario Rivera and David Vásquez, researchers of the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Chile, showed in rats that the compound ALDA-1 could reduce the voluntary intake of alcoholic drinks.
Specifically, the rats reduced their voluntary consumption of alcohol by 70% during the time they received the supply of ALDA-1; and when the compound was removed, the animals returned to their usual consumption.
The discovery was published in the scientific journal Neuropharmacology, and opens the possibility to find a treatment capable of combating alcoholism.
It is worth considering that Chile is among the countries with the highest alcohol consumption per capita in Latin America, according to the WHO.
