The ‘Trojan Horse’ treatment consists in smuggling gold nanoparticles to brain cancer cells. This technique, which has already achieved its first successes in the laboratory, could be used to treat glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), one of the most common and aggressive brain tumors in adults (six out of every hundred patients survive five years).

The research used engineering nanostructures, containing gold and cisplatin – commonly used as chemotherapy drug. The nanostructures were released in tumor cells that had been taken from patients with glioblastoma and grown in the laboratory. Once in the cells, these nanostructures were exposed to radiotherapy. This caused the gold releasing electrons, which damaged the cancer cell’s DNA and their overall structure.

After 20 days, cell culture showed no evidence of any revival, suggesting that the cells have been destroyed.

Dr. Mark Welland, Professor of Nanotechnology at the Department of Engineering and a Fellow of St John’s College, University of Cambridge, explained: “The combined therapy that we have devised appears to be incredibly effective in the live cell culture […] This is not a cure, but it does demonstrate what nanotechnology can achieve in fighting these aggressive cancers. By combining this strategy with cancer cell-targeting materials, we should be able to develop a therapy for glioblastoma and other challenging cancers in the future.”

GBM has proven to be quite resistant to treatments. The most important reason is that this tumor cells invade surrounding healthy tissue; making surgical removal virtually impossible. The chemotherapy drugs can cause a reduction in the rate at which the tumor spreads, but in several cases this is temporary, as the end cell population ends recovering.

When gold nanoparticles were used, without being accompanied by any drug, the result was a substantial damage to the cancer cells. However, cell populations that survived the attack recovered in a few days. While the effect of cisplatin, in combination with the gold nanoparticles, caused a greater synergy; allowing a more effective cell damage. Subsequent testing revealed that visible cell population was reduced by a factor of one hundred thousand, as compared to an untreated cell culture. After 20 days no renewing population of tumor cells was detected.

Via: www.Infosalus.com

A new study, published in the journal Nanoscale from the Royal Society of Chemistry in the UK, reported a smart technology to treat an aggressive form of brain cancer.
