resistance<\/strong>\u00a0is not a new\u00a0phenomenon in the world\u00a0of treatment for\u00a0diseases\u00a0caused by <strong>bacteria<\/strong>.\u00a0Mutations\u00a0that result in<strong> immune\u00a0bacteria to antibiotics<\/strong>\u00a0are common\u00a0so\u00a0enough\u00a0that if the\u00a0disease is\u00a0not eradicated\u00a0completely\u00a0in each patient, the pathogens that are\u00a0left\u00a0(and capable\u00a0to infect\u00a0new patients)\u00a0are resistant\u00a0to most common antibiotics.\u00a0Increasing year\u00a0on year,\u00a0this resistance may seem\u00a0like a\u00a0minor inconvenience\u00a0now,\u00a0an accident that\u00a0for most\u00a0patients\u00a0simply implies\u00a0using another\u00a0antibiotic.\u00a0But\u00a0long term, threatens to\u00a0completely\u00a0end the era\u00a0of antibiotics,\u00a0reducing its effectiveness\u00a0to the point that\u00a0any\u00a0<strong>antibiotic\u00a0<\/strong>currently\u00a0in use\u00a0can be used to\u00a0cure diseases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Standard\">One of our\u00a0last reserves\u00a0against such\u00a0pathogens is the\u00a0<strong>Carbapenem<\/strong>,\u00a0reserved for the most\u00a0advanced medical\u00a0centers\u00a0and used only\u00a0as a last resort\u00a0<strong>antibiotic<\/strong>.\u00a0Extremely\u00a0powerful, this\u00a0is one of the\u00a0few remaining\u00a0antibiotics\u00a0that\u00a0can eradicate\u00a0pathogens that are resistant\u00a0to\u00a0most\u00a0other antibiotics,\u00a0and thus\u00a0cure a disease that\u00a0would otherwise have\u00a0a high incidence of\u00a0mortality.\u00a0The problem occurs when\u00a0bacteria develop\u00a0mutations\u00a0that make them\u00a0resistant to\u00a0carbapenem;\u00a0many of\u00a0these\u00a0have proliferated\u00a0outside hospitals with\u00a0the capacity\u00a0to address the problem, called\u00a0<strong>CRE\u00a0<\/strong>for its acronym\u00a0in English.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Standard\">Since 2008,\u00a0the numbers of <strong>CRE<\/strong> cases in small and not specialized hospitals have\u00a0multiplied\u00a0five times.\u00a0The total numbers\u00a0are still small relative\u00a0to other diseases, being\u00a0detected\u00a0only\u00a01.4\u00a0cases per\u00a0100,000 patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Standard\">However,\u00a0the pace at which\u00a0these infections are\u00a0increasing\u00a0is alarming\u00a0given the\u00a0danger posed\u00a0by\u00a0these infections.\u00a0They are not only\u00a0difficult to detect\u00a0but\u00a0more than half\u00a0of infected patients\u00a0die as a direct\u00a0result of infection;\u00a0there are only\u00a0one or\u00a0two drugs\u00a0with varying degrees of\u00a0effectiveness in\u00a0combat,\u00a0and come with\u00a0severe side\u00a0effects.\u00a0For now,\u00a0hope lies\u00a0entirely on\u00a0the hospitals ability\u00a0to prevent the escape\u00a0of confirmed pathogens,\u00a0and\u00a0to communicate\u00a0to the public\u00a0the importance\u00a0of moderate\u00a0use\u00a0of antibiotics to prevent\u00a0the emergence of more\u00a0resistant bacteria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Standard\"><strong>Through<\/strong>:
