This finding is expected to open the door for developing an alternative treatment to the current one.<\/p>\n<p>The finding is the responsibility of a group of researchers from the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM) at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon and is coordinated by the expert Jo\u00e3o Taborda Barata. The results were published in the journal Oncogene.<\/p>\n<p>The IMM, said the study findings are <em>&#8220;quite promising regarding to the potential development of an alternative medication for the treatment of T-ALL\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The research focuses mainly on the behavior of the CHK1 protein in patients. The experts found that the substance was hyperactivated, allowing the development of tumor cells and the spread of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Barata explained about the results:<em> &#8220;We showed that CHK1 gene expression is increased in this type of leukemia. The funny thing is that the CHK1 serves as a kind of brake on cell division, but ends helping leukemia cells because it keeps them over some control [&#8230;] If we inhibit the CHK1 tumor cells eventually die.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To inhibit the protein an <strong>experimental drug compound, called PF-004777736<\/strong>, was used.
