Since, these practices have shown a significant reduction in the risk of recurrently developing kidney stones.

Kidney stones, also known as renal calculus, are a solid mass formed by small crystals of calcium oxalate. When presented, they can cause excruciating pain called renal colic and in some cases even surgery could be needed as treatment. By providing the body with plenty fluids, their formation hinders, reducing their concentration in urine.

According to Dr. Robert Centor, author of the recommendations, it is estimated that more than 10 percent of men and 7 percent of women in the US will develop a kidney stone throughout their life, with a 5-year recurrence rate after an initial event of 35% to 50% without treatment.

The new guidelines were created by reviewing several articles published about the recurrent appearance of the disease between 1948 and 2014. Centor and his team realized that drinking more fluids helps in preventing subsequent kidney stones, without causing side effects. If drinking plenty liquids is not enough, the guide recommend for those affected the use of diuretics as support, which reduce the concentration of calcium in the urine. Other alternatives include the use of citrate, which bind calcium and decrease urinary acidity; or using the drug allopurinol, which reduces the amount of uric acid.

Centor explained that patients should choose the two first options before turning to a medication, as it may cause drowsiness, stomach pain and diarrhea.

According to the guide, in order to produce two liters of urine, the person should consume more than two liters a day. The quantity will depend on each scenario, as it is directly influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and individual’s physical activity. Therefore, some people will need to drink more to ensure the 2 litters of urine.

The guide also mentioned that a high sodium intake may be associated with recurrent nephrolithiasis and it advises reducing the intake of sugary drinks and dark sodas, which have phosphoric acid, making the urine more acidic. On the contrary, clear citrus beverages (prepared with citrate) help prevent the formation of gallstones.

Through: Infosalus.com, Annals of Internal Medicine

The American College of Physicians (ACP) recently released a clinical practice guideline for people who suffer nephrolithiasis, which is the formation of kidney stones.
