\"coferpis-reunion-nal\"The XXVIII national meeting of the Federal Sanitary System<\/strong>, formed by the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (COFEPRIS) and the 32 republic states\u2019 health authorities, concluded last Friday. The event was held in the port of Mazatlan, Sinaloa, and had the aim to promote fight against illegality and informality in the health sector on all fronts, in order to prevent risks among the population<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When closing the meeting, in behave of Health Minister Mercedes Juan, Head of the COFEPRIS Mikel Arriola pointed out the importance of all federal and state verifiers reinforcing national strategy within the health sector to combat illegal activities<\/strong>, as they are the ones that can stop those who cheat and profit through population\u2019s health.<\/p>\n

The members of the sanitary meeting approved Mikel Arriola\u2019s proposal to redouble actions and maintain zero tolerance in trading illicit drugs<\/strong>, medical devices<\/strong>, supplements<\/strong>, alcohol<\/strong>, tobacco<\/strong> and clenbuterol<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We are concerned about illegal use of clenbuterol<\/strong>, drugs<\/strong>, tobacco<\/strong>, alcohol<\/strong> and miracle products<\/strong>, said Mikel Arriola. He added that from 2011 they reinforced and made more intelligent their control strategy. They performed regular inspections to street markets and retail locations. They also worked with Customs Officers and the PGR (The Attorney General’s Office) to monitor entry points and know how large shipments entered to the country. These measures, for example, allowed them to increase more than 500,000 percent illegal tobacco confiscations.<\/p>\n

“We went from 40 billion confiscated cigarettes in 2010 to 205 million units seized to date. We see now that the trend is downward, which means that the strategy worked,”<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n

In terms of illicit alcohol, Arriola said that they have gone for the first time to the mills for industrial production and verify the quality of the alcohol, and have insured almost a million liters in six months.<\/p>\n

Arriola said about illicit drugs that the COFEPRIS has concentrated on large volumes. Last year, he said, in a single hit we confiscated 170 tons of illegal drugs in Jalisco, the largest in history. With that operation, we sum more than 300 tons in the last three years, in comparison with the 2.5 tons in 2010.<\/p>\n

As for clenbuterol, he said that the COFEPRIS and the states of the republic had not taken the decision to close slaughterhouses that used clenbuterol to kill bovines, and there are now almost 100 slaughterhouses which have been suspended for three years, sending the message of zero tolerance for illegal drugs trade that threaten the health of the population.<\/p>\n

“We are going to continue enforcing the law with intelligent operations because health is not a game, and increasing the formal supply of products to discourage illegal market,\u201d<\/em> he said<\/p>\n

Arriola informed on miracle products that they have not decreased monitoring and have secured almost two million units without sanitary register, as well as applied 70 million pesos in fines for misleading advertising.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, the health representatives of the 32 federal states reported an increased number of seizures of illicit products that put in risk the health of the population.<\/p>\n

The head of the COFEPRIS reported that federal funds granted to the federal entities for risk prevention have increased by up to 118%<\/strong>, amounting 334 million pesos in 2014. He also said that it will be sought that the Congress of the Union allocates more resources to these programs during 2015.<\/p>\n

Finally, health meeting agreed to strengthen the monitoring and analytical control of food conducted by the National Public Health Laboratory and the 32 state labs with more samples and better methodologies.<\/p>\n

Arriola said this is very important for health as well as for economy, since certifications of food plants performed by health authorities are increasing exports of Mexican products to markets such as China, USA and Europe.<\/p>\n
