He explained that breast milk has antibodies that protect newborns, which are transmitted to the baby through breastfeeding.

The doctor explained that in addition to breast milk, there are some important practices that serve to prevent infection, such as maintaining clean surfaces that are regularly touched and covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing using a tissue or the crook of the elbow. “The droplets seen by backlighting when a person sneezes or coughs can cause respiratory diseases ranging from colds to pneumonia,” said the doctor.

Pneumonia is a serious public health problem, as this disease causes the greatest number of hospital admissions. It affects 1.1 million children younger than five years old worldwide, of who one in five die yearly. Each year the cases are increasing, mainly in developing countries.

Jimenez Botello explained that this disease is caused by an infection in the lungs, affecting principally the microscopic air sacks known as alveoli, which are filled with a liquid secretion. The disease can range from one mild or moderate to severe in patients affected.

He added that children and older adults are more prone to the disease because their defenses tend to be lower and any sudden change in temperature can trigger the infection.

The doctor explained that the fact that this disease is more likely in children under five and people over 65 does not mean that people who are not among these age groups cannot get pneumonia; particularly those who smoke or have asthma are more likely to get the disease.

Symptoms may include coughing, fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, rapid breathing or difficulty breathing, chills, or chest pain. These signs should not be ignored, so the patient should be immediately admitted to the hospital and be treated as soon as possible.

The specialist explained that there are two types of pneumonia: community-acquired, which can present in any person and it is linked to the seasons and cold temperatures; and hospital-acquired, which is the most aggressive and resistant to antibiotics, making more difficult to heal the patient, increasing his or her likelihood of dying.

That is why on the eve of World Pneumonia Day, Botello invited citizens (mostly those living in areas with cold temperatures) to be vaccinated, have a proper diet rich in vitamin C, have good hygiene habits and dress warmly to protect against the cold.

Unfortunately, although there are campaigns to prevent pneumonia and adequate doses of pneumococcal vaccines in Mexico, not all children under five or adults over 65 go to be vaccinated, increasing their chances of getting pneumonia.

Pneumonia treatment causes high costs, so if the patient has no social assistance or major medical insurance, it is impossible for the family to afford it. This means that they may have to pay more than half of their monthly salary; if they receive income, as there are patients with a family who are unemployed.

In 2013, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) implemented a new Global Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Pneumonia (GAPP), which seeks to accelerate the disease control combining various protection, prevention and treatment strategies.

The plan aims to protect children from pneumonia by promoting breastfeeding, washing hands, the reduction of air pollution and vaccination according to age, also by ensuring that all children who suffer from the disease have access to proper health care and antibiotics.

The professor concluded by saying that following perfectly the treatment is very important for a successful and speedy recovery, either in infants or the elderly.

Through: Notimex

Under the World Pneumonia Day, held last November 12, Dr. Luis Clemente Jimenez Botello, a specialist in respiratory diseases and professor at the School of Medicine of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Studies (ITESM), said that pneumonia can be prevented in babies by breastfeeding during the first six months of life.
