\"indre\"Pablo Kuri Morales, Sub Minister for Prevention and Health Promotion, inaugurated the meeting Expert Consultation on Laboratory Diagnosis and Management of Biological Risks<\/em>, conducted by the Pan American Health Organization\/World Health Organization (PAHO\/WHO). In the event, the health official said that the Americas have to reinforce diagnosis capacity and quick response to address viral diseases such as Ebola<\/strong> and Chikungunya<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Kuri Morales spoke in front of National Reference Laboratories of the Public\u00a0representatives from Health Agencies of the Caribbean, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, USA, Canada, Peru, Panama, and also from Spain, France and Holland, who gathered at the Institute for Diagnostic and Epidemiology Reference \u2018Dr. Manuel Martinez Baez\u2019 (InDRE). During his speech, he said that we must be prepared to confront viral diseases and stressed the importance of the event<\/strong>, since it will shape the regional guidelines and recommendations in the proper management of molecular diagnosis and biosafety for Ebola virus<\/strong>, if a case occurs within the continent.<\/p>\n

During the inauguration, the Sub Minister was accompanied by Maureen Birmingham, PAHO\/WHO Representative in Mexico; Jean-Marc Gabastou, PAHO\/WHO Advisor in Public Health Laboratory Services; Jos\u00e9 Alberto Diaz Qui\u00f1ones, InDRE Deputy General Manager; and Cuitlahuac Ruiz Matus, Epidemiology General Director at the Mexican Ministry of Health.<\/p>\n

Kuri Morales said that the country is proud of having been selected by PAHO\/WHO to host this high-level meeting, since they recognize Mexico\u2019s epidemiological surveillance work<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In turn, Maureen Birmingham indicated that this meeting aims to provide a new perspective to strengthen and standardize regional capacity for Ebola and Chikungunya viruses\u2019 molecular diagnosis. He added that the Ebola virus’s rapid spread in several West African nations, unveiled the urgent need to revise the immediate response mechanisms, in order to\u00a0efficiently respond \u00a0to this alarming scenario.<\/p>\n

Therefore, PAHO\/WHO urged the member states to review preparation protocols under the International Health Regulations<\/strong>, in order to timely and assertively detect, investigate and manage possible Ebola cases<\/strong>, preventing further outbreaks.<\/p>\n

Maureen Birmingham said that PAHO interacts continuously with the member states, directing preparedness and response efforts to build protocols and rigorously apply effective control measures, including infected isolation, laboratory diagnosis, contact tracing, protective equipment proper use for health and laboratories workers, among others.<\/p>\n

He finally said that is a priority strengthen national laboratories in the region of the Americas to provide a timely response to a possible case of Ebola , because the etiologic confirmation of the disease requires close coordination between the epidemiological characterization of the case and conducting biological and molecular tests<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
