Furthermore, any case of AH1N1 was reported. This virus, also known by the term ‘swine flu’, was responsible for the 2009 flu pandemic, causing more than 150 deaths in Mexico and high economic losses.

Data from the National Epidemiological Surveillance System revealed that such results are attributed to increased vaccine applications, which were part of this season’s immunization program. The other factor that contributed to the 73% decrease of cases was the behavior of a virus present during this season, as it had lower rates of pathogenicity and virulence.

In a statement, SEDESA informed that 2,530,100 doses against seasonal influenza, plus 264,807 against pneumococcus and 74,992 against rotavirus were supplied at vaccination modules.

Since the Vaccination Campaign against Seasonal Influenza started on October 15 until February 17, 176 cases were confirmed in contrast to 662 cases at the previous season. There was also a decrease in the number of deaths confirmed, from 92 recorded in the last winter season to five this season, considering that there is still before the winter season is over.

“Of the confirmed cases, 73 percent were H3N2 and 27 percent of type B. It was not reported a single case of influenza AH1N1” SEDESA said in the press release.

Vaccination modules were installed in 20 Metro stations (subway train system) and Metrobus stations (rapid transit bus system), plus 220 health centers and 31 hospitals in Mexico City.

The health agency advised Mexico City’s population to take preventive measures to avoid contagion, particularly in the case of vulnerable groups such as children, adults over 60, pregnant women and chronically ill. Such preventive measures include keeping warm; consuming plenty of liquids and foods rich in vitamin C such as guava, grapefruit, lemon and orange; washing hands often or using antibacterial gel; and when traveling in public transport, avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.

Seasonal Influenza’s common symptoms are severe sore throat; weakness; muscle, stomach, joints pains; severe headache, especially at frontal level; plus dry cough, and fever. If a person presents these symptoms, Sedesa recommended going immediately to the nearest health unit and avoiding self-medication.
