\"3-Conferencia-Una-vision-critica-a-la-salud-publica-en-Mexico-del-Dr-Roberto-Tapia-en-la-Academia-Nacional-de-Medicina-int1\"The National Academy of Medicine<\/strong> (ANM) held the Solemn Session for the Opening of the 152th <\/sup>Academic Year<\/strong>, event that has indicated the beginning of this institution\u2019s activities since 1864.<\/p>\n

The session was attended by Dr. Mercedes Juan-Lopez<\/strong>, Federal Minister of Health; Dr. Enrique Graue Wieche<\/strong>rs, Director of the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and current President of the ANM; Dr. Jose Narro Robles<\/strong>, Rector of the UNAM; Dr. Pablo Kuri Morales<\/strong>, Sub-Minister of Prevention and Health Promotion at the Ministry of Health; Dr. Guillermo Ruiz Palacios<\/strong>, Director of the Coordinating Committee of the National Institutes of Health and High Specialty Hospitals; Dr. Guillermo Soberon<\/strong> and Dr. Juan Ram\u00f3n de la Fuente<\/strong>, both former presidents of the Academy and former UNAM\u2019s Rectors; among other personalities of the health sector.<\/p>\n

Every year, the Dr. Ignacio Chavez Magisterial Conference<\/em><\/strong> is imparted as part of the session, in honor of the memory of the creator of the Mexican Cardiology School. This year, Dr. RobertoTapia Conyer<\/strong>, General Director of the Carlos Slim Foundation<\/strong>, was the invited as speaker for the conference, with the theme: “A critical view of public health in Mexico”.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Graue Wiechers introduced Dr. Roberto Tapia, who shared his vision of Public Health in Mexico and what Mexican society should expect from the future of this crucial social policy.<\/p>\n

Dr. Tapia said that public health is at a crucial moment that should be used to return to Mexico the leadership that distinguished the country at regional and global levels. To do this, those who have dedicated their professionals efforts to strengthen the Mexican public health should maintain constantly updated in science, new technologies and new developments, not for only avoiding the lag but for placing the country at the forefront, as befits the accredited medical tradition of Mexico.<\/p>\n

“How could Mexico become a regional and global benchmark for Public Health? The answer, like many others in this country is: thanks to the people who took care of these tasks, because ultimately the collective value of any institution is determined by the individual value of each one contributing with their work, talent, knowledge and experience,” said Dr. Tapia.<\/p>\n

Dr. Tapia made a detailed recount of facts and figures showing that in Mexico has in fact the ability of performing a top quality Public Health, as the country has the most valuable asset: its human resources<\/strong>. Prepared and committed people who have a mystique with which great achievements are reachable, as long as they are equipped with the necessary tools to do their job and their efforts are recognized.<\/p>\n

For that Public Health in Mexico can get ahead once again, facing challenges, overcoming the lack of transparency and resuming leadership, we should look to the future, where worldwide trend is to pushing law reforms favoring a Universal Health System. Joining to this trend, in real life and not just on paper, represents a great opportunity for change, he said.<\/p>\n

“If this opportunity will be used, which is actually an obligation as Mexicans committed to their country, we should not wait any longer. We must take the necessary steps as soon as possible so that our projected Universal Health System works as a health system demonstrable.”<\/p>\n

Given the possibility of creating a Universal Health System, Mexico has a chance of having the most significant change in its history. We cannot allow, once again, that theory gets away from reality. It is time to show commitment and consistency.<\/p>\n

Dr. Roberto Tapia concluded his lecture with the wise words of Mahatma Gandhi inviting to have them present in the daily work done in favor of public health in Mexico: “Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
