This year, &#8220;for the first time in the history of the award, the committee selected an institution as the winner: the <strong>Carlos Slim Foundation<\/strong>,&#8221; said <strong>Michael T. Walsh Jr<\/strong>., Director of the Global Health Initiative at Texas Children&#8217;s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Among the actions the Foundation develops, for which it was recognized, highlights the Slim Initiative for Vaccine Development against Tropical Diseases, launched in 2010 with the purpose of strengthening the capacity of developing and producing vaccines in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The Initiative is comprised by a biotechnology consortium, shaped by the <strong>Carlos Slim Foundation<\/strong>, <strong>Baylor College of Medicine<\/strong>, <strong>the Sabin Vaccine Institute<\/strong>, the <strong>Center for Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV)<\/strong> and the<strong> Autonomous University of Yucat\u00e1n<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative includes a program to develop the <strong>first therapeutic vaccine for humans against Chagas disease<\/strong>, chronic infectious illness caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by the bite of an insect known as kissing bug.<\/p>\n<p>This disease is considered one of the conditions caused by poverty, as it occurs among the most vulnerable population. Also, this disease perpetuates poverty by preventing proper school and job performances. It is estimated that about <strong>8 million people has it in Latin America<\/strong>, of which around 2 million are in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The first phase of the research was completed, in which it was demonstrated &#8212; in lab-testing &#8212; the vaccine is potentially useful to prevent the disease from progressing to chronic and life-threatening forms, plus it will be a great alternative to highly toxic drugs currently used. Over the next three years, during the second phase of the Initiative, the vaccine will be prepared for industrial production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarlos Slim Foundation is honored to receive this recognition from <strong>Texas Children&#8217;s Hospital<\/strong>,&#8221; said <strong>Dr. Roberto Tapia-Conyer<\/strong>, General Director of the Carlos Slim Foundation.\u00a0 &#8220;Our Foundation shares a common vision with Texas Children&#8217;s for alleviation of poverty and health disparity through a sound focus on the right solutions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Carlos Slim Foundation,<\/strong> through its high-impact social programs, has benefited millions of people and proving their access to high-level medical care, equipment and technology. The foundation promotes preventive care, professional development and training; and the development of research and solutions aimed at the most significant health problems faced by the most vulnerable populations in Mexico and Latin America.
