\"2-Fundacion-Carlos-Slim-apoya-Oment\"President Enrique Pe\u00f1a Nieto<\/strong> launched the National Strategy for Prevention and Control of Overweight, Obesity and Diabetes<\/strong> last October 31, 2013.<\/p>\n

The strategy included the establishment of the Mexican Observatory of Non-communicable Diseases (OMENT)<\/strong>, which is a platform that brings together and disseminates information generated by different the health subsystems and other institutions, regarding to overweight, obesity and diabetes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“Obesity<\/strong> and diabetes<\/strong> are an epidemic, with such impact that leads us to a reduced life expectancy. The National Strategy<\/strong> is the public policy response, and OMENT<\/strong> is the way to see how we are in this fight,” said Dr. Mercedes Juan, Federal Minister of Health<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

She took the opportunity to thank Carlos Slim Foundation<\/strong>, the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO)<\/strong>, the Autonomous University of Nuevo Le\u00f3n<\/strong> and the Aspen Institute for their valuable contributions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

OMENT<\/strong> has an Advisory Board chaired by the Federal Minister of Health<\/strong> and composed by heads of academic and research institutions and public health personalities, such as Jos\u00e9 Narro<\/strong> and Juan Ram\u00f3n de la Fuente<\/strong>, among others.<\/p>\n

Dr. Roberto Tapia<\/strong>, as General Director of Carlos Slim Foundation<\/strong> is one of the Advisory Board twelve members.<\/p>\n

Besides being part of the Advisory Board, the Foundation participates in OMENT<\/strong> and the National Strategy<\/strong> through the creation of Excellence Networks in Diabetes<\/strong>, which currently operate in 20 states. For this purpose, the foundation developed a technological tool called Board of Control of Chronic Diseases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This board allows accessing to real-time information on topics such as staff training<\/strong> of participating public health units, information on early detection of chronic diseases<\/strong>, drug supply<\/strong> and patients\u2019 care quality<\/strong>. This information facilitates decision-making and transparency. It can be analyzed through data mining to establish working parameters and hierarchy of units according to their performance.<\/p>\n
