The rate went from one female consumer for every seven smokers, to one in five in recent years.

It is estimated that from 17.3 million smokers in the country, about 25 percent are women, explained Dr. Xochitl Nava Martinez, researcher at the Youth Integration Center, at the conference ‘Smoking in Women’, held in the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM) – Azcapotzalco Unit.

Smoking is a leading cause of death worldwide and is a problem that has worsened in the female sector. This phenomena is related to women increasingly playing different roles inside and outside the house: they are professionals, workers, housewives, mothers, providers, among others. And it still prevails the culture that they should take care of everyone, which generates a very high stress.

This, added to the belief that a cigarette relaxes, smoking becomes a vicious circle that begins as a supposed tranquilizer, but ends up producing anxiety and increased fatigue.

Nava Martinez said there are two basic effects of smoking: it is stimulant and depressant. Furthermore, the consumption cycle is coupled to the consumption of nicotine, leading to consume even more.

The expert explained that the smoking harms from the tip of the head to the toes: it dries hair and skin, stains teeth, causes bad breath, favors tooth decay, decreases performance of taste buds; and, as it affects the efficiency of blood vessels, this habit damages neurons, affects memory, sight, vocal cords and lungs.

In more severe cases, it produces cancer in lips, throat and palate; as well as in pulmonary alveoli, which can no longer filter toxins that end on veins and arteries.

When asked how many cigarettes can cause such damage, she warned that it is not the quantity but the body’s response of each person. So, one cigarette can do much damage to a part or the whole organism. Since, she explain, smoking also causes hypertension; gastritis; colitis; breast, cervical and skin cancers; more pain during menstrual period and modifies hormones, thus affecting fertility.

She noted that studies to determine tobacco damage have been made in passive smokers, since toxins remain impregnated in curtains, furniture or clothing for a month in a home.

Source: Boletines UAM

Percentage of women smokers has increased considerably in Mexico.
