The agency added that new studies reveal that when the caesarean section rate is around 10 percent, the number of maternal and newborn deaths decreases, but when the frequency is greater than 10 percent, mortality rates do not improve.

It is estimated that the C-sections rates exceeds the ideal around the globe. In the Americas, this rate amounts to 38.9 percent on average, according to the latest available data from 25 countries.
