\"vacuna\"<\/a>About 80 million doses of safe and effective vaccines are applied in Mexico yearly<\/strong>. This program has freed the country from diseases such as polio<\/strong>, measles and rubella<\/strong>, and that has helped reduce child mortality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Mexican Immunization Program<\/strong> (MIP) is one of the most complete schemes in the world<\/strong>, with a total of 14 vaccines<\/strong>. MIP, through its National Health System, meets various international protocols to ensure safe, effective and the highest quality of vaccines for the population.<\/p>\n

All institutions forming the National Health System participate in its operation, involving actions performed in medical units, schools and communities. Among such actions there are the National Health Weeks, performed three times per year.<\/p>\n

In this way, during the last 10 years, significant progress has been made in the development and introduction of new vaccines and in the expansion of immunization programs, according to official information.<\/p>\n

To ensure vaccines\u2019 safety<\/strong>, quality and efficacy<\/strong>, Mexico has the Federal Commission for Protection Against Health Risks<\/strong> (COFEPRIS<\/strong>), which was recognized in 2012 as the National Regulatory Authority of Regional Reference for Medicines and biological products by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).<\/p>\n

Also, since 2014, COFEPRIS was recognized as Functional Agency on vaccines by the World Health Organization (WHO). This is the highest honor a sanitary authority can receive regarding vaccines, since only organizations from 28 countries have this designation.<\/p>\n

COFEPRIS\u2019s evaluation of biological products compromises three stages following the highest international standards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

First, they perform a technical and scientific evaluation of the documentation regarding the production of the vaccines<\/strong>, to obtain the sanitary registration. At this stage, the authority verifies that all production processes<\/strong>, from raw materials to finished products, are carried out in establishments that have the Certificate of Good Manufacturing Practices. Additionally, stability and clinical trials confirming the safety and efficacy of vaccines are analyzed<\/strong>, guaranteeing the quality of the product.<\/p>\n

Then, after obtaining the sanitary registration<\/strong>, producers must perform tests that they report in the Certificate of Product Analysis for each lot<\/strong>. The results of these tests are compared with standards set in the Pharmacopoeia of the United Mexican States (FEUM).<\/p>\n

And finally, for lot release of vaccines, COFEPRIS performs a test established by the FEUM<\/strong>, verifying that the results obtained are consistent with the Certificate of Product Analysis to confirm that the final product is safe and effective.<\/p>\n

In this way COFEPRIS evaluates the quality of raw materials used for the production of vaccines, the production process as well as transport and storage of the biological products. Therefore, when a vaccine is applied, it has already gone through three security filters, ensuring that there is no risk to the population.<\/p>\n
