It was developed in conjunction with specialists from the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition ‘Salvador Zubirán’, Mayo Clinic and the Carlos Slim Foundation.

Since 2014, these institutions agreed to begin a process of restructuring and changing the care provide by mutual support groups for the control of diabetes in Mexico through CASALUD, model developed by the Foundation.

Gánale a la Diabetes is an innovative material because (besides being based on scientific evidence) was made taking into account the realities and needs of people living with diabetes in Minnesota and Mexico.

According to the Mayo Clinic, about 15% of patients with diabetes who attend to their facilities in Rochester are Spanish speakers, and more than half of them speak only Spanish. Since auto-support groups are only held in English, Spanish-only speakers do not count with this help. Therefore they require educational not only materials translated into Spanish, but also materials adapted to their culture to fit their real needs.

This new tool, which consists of eight chapters and a teaching guide, has two main objectives:

Start the re-engineering process of mutual support groups in Mexico and

People living with diabetes understand better their condition and learn to control it.

The collection consists of life stories divided into five educational topics including peer education, e.g. someone who is diabetic teaches me how he is self-caring. It also includes medical tips for quick recall, practical tips of people living with diabetes, and verifiable questions to make sure patients understand the material and also for breaking myths about diabetes.

The material is contained in eight chapters:

I have diabetes, what is that?

Good and bad habits in diabetes

I watch my sugar

Good food: what to eat to be okay?

Weight Issues

Let’s move: Physical Activity

I take my medicine correctly

What happens if I do not take care of myself?

All the material was designed so diabetics and their family members understand the disease, decide to change their lifestyles, learn to better self-care and have the knowledge to control their disease.

Gánale a la Diabetes has no cost and is available through any mobile device and computer with internet access. It will also be used in primary care clinics of the Ministry of Health of Mexico. It is already being used within the National Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Overweight, Obesity and Diabetes, in mutual support groups of the National Nutrition Institute, and with the Latino population of the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, as well as in local distribution channels of the Hispanic population in the entire central area of Rochester.

Currently, “there are already other joint collaborations with Mayo Clinic, such as ‘Ask the Expert’, which consists of an online system for general practitioners which will be part of the CASALUD Model. There is also an educational information exchange between ClikiSalud, the communication portal of the Foundation, and the Mayo Clinic’s platform and vice versa, “said Dr. Hector Gallardo, Director of Operational Solutions at the Carlos Slim Foundation.

Furthermore, the first Diploma for Training Community Educators on Diabetes is being created. These technical educators will be very important in their communities. Without being doctors or nurses, they will be able to collaborate on protecting diabetics’ health, in conjunction with health professionals. This diploma will be available in Pieenso, educational online platform of the Carlos Slim Foundation.

” Beat Diabetes,” the first audiovisual educational materials in Spanish for people living with diabetes and health professionals engaged in care of it.
