Human sexuality is the capacity of human beings to have erotic experiences and responses, and is necessary for procreation and ensuring the preservation of the species. It is associated with physical and emotional aspects that create trust, care and love; and thus, is essential for human mating.

There are many psychological and physiological factors that determine our sexuality; and science, always searching of answers, is studied them. In this article, the latest research in the subject has been summarized in several points, which everyone can use to their advantage.

1. Woman maturity is a value on the rise. It is said that sex is for the young. However, in reality, science suggests that sexual satisfaction (especially in women) increases with age. This according with a study conducted at the University of California, published in the American Journal of Medicine.

The study consisted on evaluating the sexual activity and satisfaction of 806 women with an average age of 67 years. Of them, 61 percent said they were sexually satisfied. Interestingly, the percentage of sexually satisfied woman had a direct relationship with aging.

“By gaining years, we have a much better understanding about sexuality,” says Almudena Herranz, from the Sexology Center Sexorum.”Therefore, this experience can mean having more clarity about what you want, how you want it, in what circumstances and with whom” she adds.

Other research conducted by researchers from Louisiana, Florida and Baylor, focused on sexual life of married couples, showing that after 50s the spark relights.

2. Cardiovascular health is noticeable in bed. Previous studies have shown that orgasm improves some health indicators, but the other perspective is to analyze how health affects our sexuality. According to results from the National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles, conducted in the UK and published in The Lancet, poor health is associated with decreased sexual activity and satisfaction in all ages, and regrettably few people seek medical help on this subject.

This is one of the most worrying factors because sometimes sexual dysfunction can be a sign of a hidden disease. “In men, for example, it is well documented that erectile dysfunction may be an early marker of cardiovascular disease, especially in patients with diabetes, and its presence is associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction and cardiovascular mortality,” explains Ricardo Gomez Huelgas, Second Vice-president of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI).

3. High heels do not help. Among several conclusions in a new biography of female sexuality, by Naomi Wolf, based on studies of gynecologist Eden Fromberg, it is highlighted the fact that wearing high heels is link to have greater difficulty for reaching orgasm in woman.

To understand a little more this statement, the physiotherapist Paul Delgado de la Serna explains: “The heels move forward the body posture, resulting in an anteversion of the pelvis and, in many cases, this leads to a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles, […] It is advisable to wear heels between 2 and 4 centimeters high.”

4. Men’s sweat stimulates the women. According to the study published in The Journal of Neuroscience, fluid secreted by male glands can alter the levels of cortisol in the female, resulting in sexual arousal. Specifically, the research focused on hormonal changes in women who have smelled androstadienone, a compound of male sweat.

As Lluis Bassas explains, member of the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition (SEEN), “cortisol levels can vary widely and very quickly to various stimuli moderated by nerve and metabolic signals, or from other hormones, which highlights the differences between genders in terms of nerve endings sensitivity that capture volatile compounds by smell.”

5. We enjoyed more sex with a steady partner. According with the National Sexual Health Survey, conducted by Public Health Agency of Barcelona (ASPB), 97% of men and 96% of women claim there is a higher level of sexual satisfaction with a stable partner.

Sexologist Almudena Herranz explains that in a stable relationship exists greater complicity and intimacy than with sporadic partners, “so that it is built a personal language that helps understand each other more easily and generates a good climate for them to express themselves truly and consistently about their unique wishes and desires.”

6. Sleep well is essential. Specifically, each additional hour of sleep increases by 14 percent the probability of a woman having sexual relations the next day, according to researcher David Kalmbach, University of Michigan.

In this regard de la Serna said: “A good rest, both in quantity and quality, promotes the proper functioning of hormonal cycles that require a certain number of hours of rest. The clearest example is the cycle of cortisol.” But also, having a proper rest at night “keeps us active and with sexual appetite; while not resting turn us off, and the body gives priority to core activities and relegates other non-priority ones, such as sexuality“.

7. Spicy food arouses. Those who prefer spicy food are hot in every way, due to their high levels of testosterone. According to the publication Physiology & Behavior, men that love the spicy have more testosterone, hormone related with maintenance of sexual desire.

8. Gender equality will make you a better lover. When we talk about sex, we also talk about genders, the fact of being a man or woman, and how the two coexist. And if they do so in an environment where differences are respected, surely they will understand each other better in bed.

Researcher from the University of Chicago, Edward Laumann, conducted a study in 2006 in nearly 30 countries. He found that couples in Western countries, who enjoyed greater equality between men and women, had higher levels of sexual satisfaction.

9. Extra pounds obstruct sexuality. And this is not resulting from flexibility reasons. Medical University of Ilam (Iran) conducted a study last January, cause and effect relation between excess weight and female sexual dysfunction. Furthermore an Italian study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that obese men after losing 10% of their body weight significantly improved their sexual function.

10. Athletes enjoy more. Omer Faruk Karatas, researcher at the University of Ankara (Turkey), compared female athletes with non-active women. He found that athletes have an increased blood flow to the clitoris. “Sport, besides eliminating stress, improves breathing and circulation, causing a size increase of their blood vessels, improving the blood supply to their vaginal area, clitoris and surrounding muscles, which affects, for good, in the quality of intercourse, “says Pablo Delgado de la Serna.

11. Turning mobiles off (for some time) favors intimacy. To connect with a partner, either stable or occasional, we need to disconnect from other issues. And this includes social networks. A new study, by the University of Durham (UK), researched the role of smart phones and technology in sexual and romantic life.

They analyzed the impact of technology and smartphones in the romance, intimacy and sex of people with long-term relationships, showing that although this technology has its benefits; it creates many tensions in the couple.

The advice of the researchers is simple: learn to turn off the phone when we want to enjoy a moment of intimacy.

Source: Agencia ID

Sexuality is an aspect of everyday life; it is one of our most basic instincts, only after eating and sleeping.
