The device helps prevent infections transmitted by contaminated lancets and favors those users who have blood clotting problems.

David Shimomoto Sanchez, a graduate student in physics of materials, explained that the biosensor is shaped as a bracelet containing two electrodes that are placed below the wrist. These sensors extract glucose from the skin through electroosmotic flows, i.e. by applying a small electric current.

The device takes three minutes to extract the patient’s skin glucose without causing any pain. Then, the results are chemically analyzed and displayed in the bracelet’s screen. These results are reliable since the sugar levels content in the skin are the same than those of the blood.

Shimomoto Sanchez said the bracelet can also work through an application for mobile devices, communicating via NFC (Near Field Communication). The app keeps a record of all the glucose level measurements and let the user know if there is any health risk.

The benefits of innovation include costs savings, as well as a more detailed history of the condition to help control it. The app also allows sending these records directly to the user’s physician.

He said that the materials used for the manufacture of the device are of Mexican origin, because the electrodes were created in Ensenada from a screen printing method.

The team that worked on the device for ten months in the CICESE is integrated by Jose Antonio Tejeda Sanchez Rodriguez and David Shimomoto, engineers in nanotechnology, and Ivan Antonio Peralta Mendoza, electronic engineer. They were advised by Dr. Joseph Wang of the University of California San Diego, Dr. Victor Julian Garcia Gradilla and Dr. Oscar Edel Contreras Lopez of the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Center at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

Source: Agencia ID

Students at the Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education Ensenada (CICESE, for its acronym in Spanish) developed a glucose biosensor that does not require punctures to calculate sugar levels of diabetic patients.
