These chemicals, which are acquired through the consumption of meat, fish or dairy products, are related to male fertility problems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Thousands of chemicals may be causing a slowly decline in human health and male fertility. Some act as hormonal disrupters that induce a decrease in seminal quality or an increase in genital abnormalities, such as cryptorchidism, hypospadias or testicular cancer.<\/p>\n

PCBs are a family of chlorinated aromatic compounds that possess a great chemical stability<\/strong>. Therefore, once introduced in the environment, they are very resistant to degradation, resisting for decades<\/strong>. They are also very fat soluble, so they have a large capacity to accumulate in the fatty tissue of animals along the food chain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Given the high toxicity of some compounds, Raiza Paul, Ph.D. of the Department of Biotechnology of the University of Alicante (UA), has developed a novel analytical method to determine the presence of PCBs in blood serum samples of one milliliter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“This methodology has allowed the individual analysis of dioxin-like PCBs (dl-PCBs) in patients with fertility problems, demonstrating that exposure to these environmental toxicants causes negative effects on seminal quality<\/em>,” he explains.<\/p>\n

The method\u2019s optimization and its results have allowed its immediate implementation in clinical practice<\/strong> within the Assisted Reproduction Program of the Fertility IVF Spain clinic in Alicante, directed by Jon Aizpurua. In addition to contributing to the improvement of the quality of health services and the diagnosis of reproductive problems, this innovation has allowed treatment individualization.<\/p>\n

The Power of a Balanced Diet<\/strong><\/p>\n

Because these compounds are likely to concentrate on fatty tissues and their elimination is very slow, reducing the consumption of red meats, blue fish, dairy products and other animal foods with high fat content can reduce PCBs in the body<\/strong>. On the other hand, following a balanced diet with adequate amounts of fruits, vegetables and cereals contributes to avoiding excessive exposure to these chemicals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“A healthy diet would really be the best long-term strategy to reduce the body burden of these compounds in our organisms, and especially in young people, in order to protect their health and that of future generations<\/em>,” he explained.<\/p>\n

However, it should be noted that environmental pollution is a very important public health problem that requires the application of environmental policies to prevent and reduce exposure to this toxics.<\/p>\n
