\"\"The National Academy of Medicine<\/strong> promotes studying, teaching and researching in the field of medicine. Its advances are collected, analyzed and disseminated in order to update knowledge and guide criteria of both health professionals and authorities, as well as the general public.<\/p>\n

In a session titled \u2018<\/strong>Primary Health Care: From Public Policy to Comprehensive Care\u2019<\/strong>, <\/em> moderated by Dr. Guillermo Sober\u00f3n<\/strong>, Dr. Roberto Tapia Conyer<\/strong>, General Director of the Carlos Slim Foundation<\/strong>, presented the keynote lecture “Feasibility of Primary care in our environment”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In his presentation, Dr. Tapia reflects on the current state of the Health System in Mexico, the developing processes and the expected results.<\/p>\n

What he proposes is a reengineering of the National Primary Care model to have health services that fulfill four great characteristics:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Ubiquitous health services, in terms of physical space.<\/li>\n
  2. Continuous health services, talking about their temporality.<\/li>\n
  3. Preventive health services, with respect to the operation scheme.<\/li>\n
  4. Person-centered health services, when talking about approach.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The proposal of Carlos Slim Foundation<\/strong> (FCS) to support this reengineering is its CASALUD model<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    “We developed the CASALUD model<\/strong> and have been perfecting it for more than 9 years. It is already a success in the fight against [chronic] diseases. Thanks to the partnership with the Ministry of Health, it is now possible to follow 1.8 million patients in 12,460 clinics<\/em>,” said Dr. Roberto Tapia.<\/p>\n

    Today, CASALUD<\/strong> offers to Mexico the Quality of Care Diabetes Index<\/strong>, which allows measuring and comparing the performance of each of these clinics, in an open and transparent way. This is an unprecedented case worldwide.<\/p>\n

    On the other hand, the CASALUD Model<\/strong> supports, through the Integrated Measurement for Timely Detection<\/strong> (Medici\u00f3n Integrada para la Detecci\u00f3n Oportuna, MIDO)<\/strong>, timely prevention of chronic diseases. So far, 780 thousand people have already been tested. Most of them believed they were healthy, but the screening showed that 13.3% were prediabetic and 5.8% have diabetes and did not know it. Thanks to MIDO<\/strong>, all these people are continuously monitored for prevent, delay or even reverse the disease.<\/p>\n

    From this experience and results, during the last year the CSF<\/strong> has worked to bring CASALUD<\/strong> to more and more people, including visiting house to house to detect diseases. Through local alliances, this care model has been implemented in Hidalgo, Quer\u00e9taro, Tabasco and in Mexico City.<\/p>\n
