\"\"<\/a>Scientists from the Center for Biomedical Research in Network for Cardiovascular Diseases (CIBERCV) at the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute analyzed the degree of shortening of telomeres and their relationship with the progression of heart failure (HF) for one year period<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The results, published in the Journal of Translational Medicine<\/em>, suggest that changes in telomere length of monocytes \u2013a type of white blood cell\u2013 are probably not a useful biomarker of HF progression<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“We have shown a 22% reduction in telomere length of circulating monocytes in patients with heart failure after a period of one year<\/strong>. However, neither the length of the telomeres nor their difference are related to the clinical results obtained during long-term follow-up<\/strong><\/em>,” said Antoni Bay\u00e9s-Gen\u00eds, CIBERCV group leader, and head of Cardiology at the Catalan hospital.<\/p>\n

New techniques to measure the size of telomeres<\/h3>\n

Located at the ends of the chromosomes, the telomeres shorten as the body ages and this shortening has been linked to multiple diseases, including cancer or heart failure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Previously, the group of researchers developed a method to simultaneously measure subsets of monocytes and the length of their telomeres<\/strong>. Now, this Flow-FISH analysis, based on multicolored flow cytometry and fluorescent in situ hybridization<\/strong>, allowed them to study the telomere length of the three existing subpopulations of circulating monocytes: classical (CD14++CD16-), intermediate ( CD1 ++CD16+) and non-classical (CD14+CD16++)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The authors aimed to establish a relationship between the degree of shortening of monocyte telomeres with clinical outcomes in a cohort of more than one hundred outpatients with HF.<\/p>\n

A top-level public health problem<\/h3>\n

Heart failure is a serious public health problem that imposes significant health, social and economic burdens<\/strong>. In developed countries, it affects 1-2% of the adult population, increasing up to 8-10% in those over 70 years of age<\/strong>, being the first cause of hospitalization in this population.<\/p>\n

Preliminary data revealed that people with heart failure have shorter telomeres than healthy controls balanced by age and sex, based on circulating leukocyte analysis<\/strong>. However, there are no longitudinal studies that have investigated telomere shortening among patients with chronic heart failure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
