Rheumatoid arthritis is a long-term autoimmune disease that causes pain, swelling and stiffness in multiple joints and tendons, usually affecting the hands, feet and wrists. As other autoimmune diseases, rheumatoid arthritis is a disease in which the immune system starts attacking the body’s own tissues, causing inflammation.  While there is no cure for the condition yet, modern treatments can ease the symptoms and alter the way the disease progresses to keep joint damage to a minimum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) act by altering the underlying disease rather than treating symptoms<\/strong>; by slowing down the disease and its effects on the joints, they reduce pain, swelling and stiffness. However not all patients react adequately to this treatment.<\/p>\n

The clinical trial, conducted by Prof. Dr. Gerd-R\u00fcdiger Burmester, Head of Charit\u00e9’s Medical Department, Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, assessed the efficacy of upadacitinib in patients with an inadequate response to ‘conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs’<\/strong>. The tested drug is a selective inhibitor of the enzyme Janus kinase 1 (JAK1)<\/strong>, disrupting an important signaling pathway that is responsible for triggering inflammatory responses.<\/p>\n

The results showed that patients treated with upadacitinib showed had improvements in joint swelling when compared to patients receiving placebo<\/strong>, experiencing less pain and showing improvements in joint function.<\/p>\n

“Our results prove that JAK inhibitors represent an effective treatment alternative in patients with long-term conditions who do not respond adequately to conventional drugs, and in those for whom biologics are not a good treatment option<\/strong>. JAK inhibitors could help these patients achieve a quick response to treatment, allowing them to gain control over their illness<\/strong>. The trial sponsor AbbVie is currently in the process of collating all trial results and submitting them to the European and US regulatory authorities for review<\/em>,” said Prof. Burmester.<\/p>\n
