The World Health Organization has announced that during this year there have been 18.1 million new cases of cancer and 9.6 million people died from this disease. Responsible factors include population growth, aging and changes in lifestyles typical of industrialized countries.

The GLOBOCAN 2018 database, accessible online as part of the IARC Global Cancer Observatory, provides estimates of incidence and mortality in 185 countries for 36 types of cancer. An analysis of these results, published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, highlights the great geographic diversity in the appearance of cancer and the variations in the magnitude and profile of the disease in the different regions of the world.

The data indicate that one in five men and one in six women in the world develop cancer throughout their lives, and that one in eight men and one in 11 women die from the disease. It is estimated that the total number of people alive after five years of cancer diagnosis is 43.8 million.

Factors for growth

The report highlights that the growing epidemiological burden of the disease is due to several factors, including population growth and aging, as well as social and economic development. In fast-growing economies, there is a change in the prevalence of cancers related to poverty and infections, while in industrialized countries it is associated with life styles.

On the other hand, the effectiveness of prevention explains the decrease in the incidence rates of some cancers, such as the lung cancer in men in northern Europe and North America, and cervical cancer in most of the regions except for Sub-Saharan Africa. However, the new data shows that most countries still face an increase in the absolute number of cases diagnosed, which require treatment and care.

Global patterns show that about half of new cases and more than half of cancer deaths in 2018 in men and women will occur in Asia, in part because the region has almost 60% of the world’s population.

Europe accounts for 23.4% of global cancer cases and 20.3% of deaths from the disease, although it only accounts for 9% of the world’s population. The Americas have 13.3% of the world population and represent 21% of incidence and 14.4% of world mortality.

Higher mortality rates

Unlike other regions of the world, the proportions of cancer deaths in Asia and Africa (57.3% and 7.3%, respectively) are higher than the proportions of incident cases (48.4% and 5.8%, respectively) , because these regions have a higher frequency of certain types of cancer associated with a worse prognosis and higher mortality rates, in addition to limited access to timely diagnosis and treatment.

Lung, breast and colorectal cancers are the three main types in terms of incidence. Together, they are responsible for a third of the incidence of the disease and the burden of mortality worldwide.

Source: SINC

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has published the latest estimates of the global epidemiological burden of cancer during 2018.
