Licea Navarro, carries out a study on shark antibodies for the development of medicines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the course of hundreds of millions of years, <strong>sharks have faced a large number of pathogens that have attacked them, so their immune system is highly sophisticated and keeps them safe and sound<\/strong>, said Licea Navarro.<\/p>\n<p>The director of the Division of Experimental and Applied Biology of the CICESE said that <strong>this is one of the reasons why in this institution they have dedicated to study since the year 2000 sharks\u2019 complex and evolved immune system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the magazine Science and Development of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONCYT), Licea Navarro explained that sharks are organisms that have existed for hundreds of millions of years, so many, that they could be considered as living fossils.<\/p>\n<p>He mentioned that the <strong>first sharks appeared in the seas approximately 340 million years ago<\/strong>, and sharks continue to exist today, even after the massive extinction of species due to the great meteorite of Yucatan.<\/p>\n<p>The researcher explained that within the immune systems of vertebrates there are proteins called <strong>antibodies<\/strong>; these <strong>molecules bind to the invading agents to neutralize them and eliminate them from the organism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the neutralization effect, the <strong>antibodies bind with great affinity and specificity to the foreign agent, which immobilizes and inactivates it completely<\/strong>, a characteristic that has served to develop several drugs.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of sharks, for some evolutionary reason, <strong>one of their advantages is that their antibodies are thermostable<\/strong>; that is, they withstand temperatures that no other antibody is able to withstand.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to generate a drug with a shark antibody, you have an unparalleled commercial advantage, since <strong>it can be at room temperature in the desert, in the high montains or in the jungle<\/strong>, and it will not lose its activity, he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><em>La Jornada<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A group of specialists from the Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education of Ensenada (CICESE), headed by Alexei F.
