Project leader PhD in Chemical Sciences Jos\u00e9 Juan Escobar S\u00e1nchez, researcher at the Department of Engineering and Pharmaceutical Technology of the UNAM\u2019s Cuautitl\u00e1n Campus, develops research in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmacology, Nanotechnology and Dermatology.<\/p>\n

The elevated level of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood is a syndrome known as dyslipidemia<\/strong>. Commonly drugs are administered orally<\/strong>, which causes gastric irritation and fluctuations, this makes the medication ineffective and with strong adverse effects for patients. The new patch aims to revolutionize this method<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

How does it work?<\/h3>\n

The base of the patch is formed by chitosan and poloxamer, which help reducing lipid levels. Patients can place it without having to go to a specialist; and the medication is slowly released during a period that lasts between 7 to 15 days<\/strong>. The bio-adhesion of the patch has better results in areas with little hairiness. Besides being impermeable, it offers a local release systemic effect by micro injections.<\/p>\n

“For the rhythm of life and the stress in which we are immersed, patches can be a more efficient treatment than oral ones, just because there are no fluctuations if you forget to take it or because you no longer complete the treatment<\/em>,” Dr. Escobar Ch\u00e1vez said to UNAM Global, who has five patents for different systems to fight various diseases.<\/p>\n

Before starting the treatment, the individual must line his skin with a roller composed of micro needles that pierce the superficial layer, which does not represent any discomfort<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Dyslipidemias in Mexico has been increasing in the las years due to high rates of obesity. In addition, it is a potential cause of cardiovascular heart attacks, which are the leading cause of death in the country.<\/p>\n

There are more and more treatments focused on improving our ailments, such as the replacement of insulin injections for people with diabetes. However, we must remember that the first step to avoid a smaller brain for abdominal fat is prevention<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
