The data show that women are much more vulnerable to heat, while cold causes more deaths among men.

Mortality as a result of cold and heat has been declining in Spain over the past four decades, according to a study led by the Institute of Global Health of Barcelona (ISGlobal). The reserachers analyzed the vulnerability of the Spanish population to temperatures in a context of global warming.

The study, published in The Lancet Planetary Health, analyzed the temperatures and deaths from cardiovascular diseases registered in 48 Spanish provinces between 1980 and 2016. These disorders are the main cause of death in Spain; and there is solid evidence on associations between temperature and mortality from these diseases.

The results show that in the period between 2002 and 2016 the mortality due to cardiovascular diseases attributable to temperature decreased by 38.2% compared to the period 1980-1994. The study, which analyzed periods of 15 years, shows that this cause of mortality related to temperature has fallen at a rate of more than 17% per decade.

Specifically, cardiovascular mortality attributable to heat in the period 2002-2016 was reduced by more than 42% among men and by more than 36% among women compared to the period 1980-1994. With regard to mortality attributable to cold, the comparison between these same periods shows a decrease of 30% among women and almost 45% among men.

Differences between men and women

The data highlight significant differences according to sex, since cardiovascular mortality associated with heat is much higher among women, while men are more vulnerable to cold. Likewise, it is observed that the mortality risk attributable to heat increases significantly in older ages, while in the case of cold it is only for men.

“On the one hand, there has been an increase in the average temperature of almost 1º C in the last four decades. The tendency is that there are fewer days of cold temperatures, both moderate and extreme, and more days of warm temperatures. And at the same time there has been an adaptation of the Spanish population to both cold and warm temperatures, since we observe that in the same temperature the number of deaths that occur is less now than four decades ago,” explains Hicham Achebak, researcher of ISGlobal and the Center for Demographic Studies (CED) and first author of the study.

The causes that would explain this adaptation to the temperatures are the socioeconomic development and the registered structural improvements, which include the improvement of the health system and of the houses.

The authors detail that in Spain between 1991 and 2009 per capita income increased from € 8,700 to € 22,880, and spending on health care per person went from € 605 to € 2,182. In addition, the percentage of homes with heating went from 25.8% in 1991 to 56.9% in 2011, while air-conditioned homes went from 4.16% in 1991 to 35.5% in 2008.

“What we have seen is that the Spanish population has shown a great capacity to adapt to the increase in temperature, but this has not necessarily been linked to a strategy to mitigate the consequences of climate change. Therefore, it could be the case that this adaptive response could be limited and would not occur at higher levels of warming, when an acceleration in the increase in temperatures occurs,” says Joan Ballester, ISGlobal researcher and coordinator of the study.

Source: SINC

A new study reveals that deaths due to cardiovascular diseases due to cold and heat have significantly decreased in Spain.
