In this case the project seeks that instead of opening the skull the type of tumor is determined with some markers that can be found in the cerebrospinal fluid or the blood,” he said.

The researcher explained that with these samples three types of markers can be found: cells of the tumor, as well as the DNA where the mutations of the tumor are found. The third marker is ribonucleic acid (RNA) that helps to delimit a specific mutation in cancer cells, so you can know what type of tumor it is and how bad it is.

The BUAP student indicated that these markers will also help determine which treatment will be most effective in combating the tumor and know if the patient has a good response.

Among the advantages of this method, Gatica Soriano indicated that the diagnosis is less invasive, less expensive and much faster, since molecular equipment can analyze up to 7.5 milliliters of blood in two minutes.

This project, which is developed in the INNN, is a protocol that is already completed and has been presented to the different institutes, including the Cancer and Genomic Medicine Institutes. However, clinical trials on patients have not yet started.

The liquid biopsy protocol is part of the Summer of Scientific Research, a program created by the Pfizer Scientific Institute in conjunction with the Mexican Academy of Sciences that supports students to conduct research in the area of medicine.

Source: Agencia ID

Mexican researchers presented on Thursday advances on a protocol of liquid biopsy for brain tumors that helps detect its size and malignancy without opening the brain.
