Experts clarify that these inequalities could be reduced in the course of a single government.

The European Health Equity Status Report 2019 reveals that the inequalities in many of the 53 countries of the European region remain the same or have worsened despite the attempts of governments for addressing them.

“For the first time, this text provides governments with data and tools to address health inequalities and produce visible results in a short period of time, even during a four-year national government,” explains Zsuzsanna Jakab, regional director of WHO for Europe.

The report identifies five key risk factors that prevent achieving good health and leading a safe life; and assigns each of them a percentage that reflects their contribution to the global burden of inequality.

Income security and social protection occupies the top place. Around 35% of health inequalities are due to the fact that people “cannot reach the end of the month“. Then, living conditions occupied second place with 29%, which includes issues such as lack of resources, availability of appropriate housing or unsafe neighborhoods.

The third place is social and human capital, which represents 19% of inequalities and refers to feelings of isolation, low levels of trust in others or violence against women.

Access and quality of health care follows with 10%, since the lack of universal health and high direct payments for health services can force people to choose between using them or meeting other basic needs.

Finally, there is the inability to participate fully in the labor market, which represents 7% of health inequalities. The quality of employment is equally important, since unsafe or temporary jobs and poor working conditions have an equally negative effect on health.

According to the experts, reducing inequalities by 50% would produce financial benefits for countries that range between 0.3% and 4.3% of GDP.

What is the severity of the health gap?

The findings show a significant health gap. While the average life expectancy in the entire European region increased to 82.0 years for women and 76.2 years for men in 2016, there are still significant inequalities: life expectancy in women is reduced by up to 7 years and in men up to 15 years if they belong to the most disadvantaged groups.

Nearly twice as many women and men in the less affluent 20% of the population report illnesses that limit their freedom to perform their daily activities, compared to those in the wealthiest 20%.

Moreover, in disadvantaged areas 4% more babies do not survive their first year, compared to those born in the richest areas.

In addition, the report identifies new and emerging groups at risk of falling into health inequity. These include, for example, young people who leave school early or people living with a disease that limits their daily activities.

Source: SINC

A new WHO report identifies five key risk factors that prevent good health, such as income security, living conditions and social and human capital.
