tamaño-actualidad-en-saludOn February 11, a joint meeting between National Academy of Medicine of Mexico (ANM) and the Federal Ministry of Health was held. It was headed by Dr. Enrique Graue Wiechers, President of the ANM and Director of the Faculty of Medicine at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and was attended by Minister of Health Mercedes Juan-Lopez, as guest of honor.

The session was also attended by the Head of the Federal Commission for Protection against Health Risks (COFEPRIS), Mikel Arriola, and Sub-Ministers Pablo Kuri and Eduardo González Pier. All of them highlighted the work done by the Ministry of Health on progress made for achieving the objectives previously established in the National Plan on Development by the Federal Government. These objectives are intended to consolidate protection, health promotion and disease prevention actions, as well as reduce risks affecting the health of the population and promote a Universal National Health System, under the guidance of the Ministry of Health.

Among the major achievements, Dr. Mercedes Juan-Lopez mentioned: increased enrollment in the Seguro Popular (Popular Insurance), augmented investment of resources in the health sector, reduction of pocket expense from 54% in 2004 to 45% in 2012, and incidence diminution of catastrophic expenditures in households from 0.66% to 0.33% between 2005 and 2012.

Regarding the resources of the Seguro Popular, Dr. Juan-Lopez said she is satisfied with the work done jointly with the Congress, as from such work the new amendments to the General Health Act were approved, now allowing a better transparency control and thus facilitating the traceability of resources.

The Minister of Health said that the amendments to the General Health Act, allowed saving 3.7 billion pesos (about 250 million USD) in 2013 and more than 4 billion pesos (around 270 million USD) in 2014. Finally, the biggest challenge for this year is the effective and continuous distribution of drugs, she concluded.
