With the goal of providing care, prevention and counseling to combat addictions, the National Commission against Addictions (Conadic) has a group of experts who provide support through the Telephone Counseling Center (COT); explained Norma Curiel, deputy director of the center.
Curiel explained that for 15 years, through the toll-free telephone number 01800911 2000, experts provide advice to people who have problems or concerns regarding addictions or domestic and school violence problems, 24 hours 365 days year.
The orientation team is formed by 70 people, receiving ongoing training in institutions such as the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Ministry of Health’s National Institute of Psychiatry “Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz”. The counselors are specialized in addictions and prevention of risky behaviors, providing guidance when parents detect that their children are consuming psychoactive substances.
The COT provides guidance, which includes not only information about how to broach the subject with the family, but also intervenes directly when is necessary to stabilize the patient. In addition, it is taught how to prevent addiction problems from home and orientates on how to handle the problem.
The Telephone Counseling Center works with standards of confidentiality and anonymity, is direct and accessible, facilitates communication, and accompanies those seeking their services in the analysis of alternative solutions to their problems.
