Dr. Roberto Tapia Conyer, General Director of the Carlos Slim Foundation participated in the forum ‘Vaccination in Mexico’, conducted in the Senate of the Republic and was inaugurated by Senators Cristina Diaz, Maki Ortiz and Maria Elena Barrera.
Following an initiative by the PRI and PVEM to amend the General Health Law (LGS) in vaccination the subject was addressed from different points of view in the forum. All members coincided in the importance of a prompt approval of the initiative, which includes the following elements:
- Establish vaccination as a right.
- Set vaccines as an input of national security.
- Strengthen the leading role of the National Immunization Council.
- Otorgar a las vacunas el carácter de insumos de seguridad nacional.
- Fortalecer el papel conductor del Consejo Nacional de Vacunación.
- Ensure labeled products for acquisition, distribution and application of vaccines included in the National Vaccination Schedule every year.
Dr. Tapia Conyer, in the Lecture ‘The Value of Vaccines for Public Health’, stated that “despite the great advances that Mexico has, there are areas for improvement on vaccination, so it is essential to promote legislative projects like this from the civil society.”
He emphasized the need to strengthen a legal framework to prevent backtracking in public health achievements and encourage innovation in research and new drugs to eradicate other diseases. “We cannot rest on our laurels, we need to be sensitive to innovation. In this vaccination scheme, there is no place for mediocrities, because it impacts on the health of people,” said Roberto Tapia.
The LGS reform should compel state and municipal authorities to fulfill with the responsibility of ensuring vaccination. Because unfortunately, “the irresponsibility of government services have led to scenarios impossible to imagine in our country today “.
