libro-cervicouterinoDr. José Antonio Ruiz Moreno presented his book A Brief History of Cervical Cancer, published by the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) of the Mexican Ministry of Health. The event took place during the Guadalajara International Book Fair (IBF).

The book is one of several preventive actions against cervical cancer promoted by the Ministry of Health. Among such actions also highlights the application of the vaccine against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) to girls from fifth grade, with the objective of reducing the risk for developing this disease in the future.

Ruiz Moreno said the greatest probability of acquiring HPV is through sexual intercourse, so it is crucial to apply the vaccine before sexual activity begins.

“There is evidence that the vaccine against Human Papilloma Virus in many cases reduces the risk of cervical cancer,” said the surgeon and specialist in gynecology and obstetrics.

He also said that efforts to prevent cervical cancer, conducted by the federal agency, have focused on screening women using Pap smear, a well-known test.

In his book, Dr. Moreno describes his experience in medicine and teaching about the disease, and identifies substantial advances in the understanding and management of it. He also included brief biographies of the pioneering doctors in this field, and how their work led to scientific advances in cervical cancer, for which there are already methods of prevention and treatment. The work also counts an extensive specialized bibliography, in order to give the reader tools to learn further about this condition.
