Two Mexican scientists graduated from the Institute of Biotechnology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) created a platform of services that provides a genetic analysis of patients who wish to anticipate possible diseases, through detailed and specialized clinical analysis.

The startup Geno+ performs clinical tests in their laboratory located in Cuernavaca, Morelos. The tests include blood count, and massive sequencing of a fecal sample to see the state of the individual’s gut microbiota.

Next, the users answer a detailed questionnaire of 200 questions to inform in detail their lifestyle and daily routine and environment, like meal times, favorite foods and more in order to complement the individual study.

The entire information on blood chemistry, blood count and genetic information, plus microbiota and personal data, are subject to an evaluation process using specialized software developed by the scientists themselves, which uses artificial intelligence.

The result, delivered between 10 and 30 seconds, is a personalized diagnosis that provides information on possible diseases that the patient may develop.

One of the founders of Geno +, Dr. Gabriel Guillén Solís, says that getting genetic information without the software would take up to two months. He said that they created the software that yields a combination of results, which show the diseases the person is most prone. Based on that, the researchers develop a preventive plan, to avoid at all costs the development of those diseases.

“We have a patent on the methodology to analyze the samples and the software protected by copyright,” points out Dr. Guillén Solís.

The co-founder of the company, Rosaura Aparicio Fabre, chemistry pharmacobiologist with four postdocs, indicates in an interview that the first version of the platform is metabolic, that is, only analyzes mutations of the genome that have to do with diabetes, overweight, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, cholesterol and high triglycerides.

The scientists have done the analysis to more than 200 ISSSTE patients, in whom they have seen that a high percentage of their markers are altered by their life habits.

“Once the analysis is done, we generate the feeding profile, by portions or by suggested food, which can be modified at the request of the patient. We generate breakfast, lunch and dinner diets in a personalized way.

“The genetic markers we find in the analyzes we do also allow us to see what kind of plants can generate a positive change in the health of the person,” says the specialist who estimates that in total Geno + has made more than 600 tests.

Geno+ has the financial participation of Armando Sanders and Sergio Sánchez. The cost per personalized test is 5 thousand pesos, but it is consider the possibility to make it even more economical to reach more Mexicans.
