telemedicine-in-mexicoFederal Ministry of Health announced that telemedicine is an indispensable tool for advancing the quality of health services, so that strategies for its implementation and consolidation in Mexico were reviewed.

Telemedicine is the provision of clinical health care at distance through the use of telecommunication and informational technologies. In Mexico many communities live far distance from a health unit center, and for this reason, telemedicine is considered a very valuable tool.

In a statement, the agency noted that this system facilitates remote highly specialized medical care, allowing treatment of complex diseases without patients having to move to their nearest big cities.

At the National Meeting of Telemedicine State Coordinators 2015, organized by the National Center for Technological Excellence in Health (CENETEC – Health), representatives of 20 states come together to work in its development.  They stressed the need for implementing telemedicine in the entire nation, because it contributes to reducing maternal mortality and improve quality of life.

CENETEC’s General Director, Maria Luisa Gonzalez Retiz, said that it is necessary to standardize Telemedicine’s criteria, processes and actions, to ensure updated information in the National Monitoring Centre for Telemedicine.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the states of Aguascalientes, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Guerrero, Jalisco, Mexico State, Morelos, Nuevo Leon, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa , Tabasco, Tamaulipas and Tlaxcala.
