pipa-explosionLast January 29, three people died and 73 were injured at an explosion occurred at the Maternity and Children’s Hospital in Mexico City. This calamity was caused by a gas leak, resulting in the collapse of 70 per cent of the building.

Attention will be ensured to all patients requiring to be admitted to the federal network of hospitals in Mexico City, Federal Minister of Health Mercedes Juan reported during a tour around several of the hospitals where the victims of the explosion were sent.

After visiting the site of the explosion, along with Interior Minister Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong and Head of Government of Mexico City Miguel Angel Mancera, the Minister of Health visited the injured patients to get informed about their health.

At the ABC Hospital – Santa Fe, Mercedes Juan exchanged views with physicians and ordered the transfer of three people: two of them to the National Center for Research and Treatment of Burns (CENIAQ) — since the severity of their injuries requires specialized care — and another person to the General Hospital of Mexico ‘Dr. Eduardo Liceaga’.

One of the two patients in critical condition that were referred to the CENIAQ is a 45-year-old woman, who suffered serious burns on 70 percent of her body. The second is a 56-year-old man, who has burns of second and third grade in different body areas, along with a fractured skull. The CENIAQ is part of the National Rehabilitation Institute and has the infrastructure to care for patients with severe burns.

The person referred to the General Hospital of Mexico ‘Dr. Eduardo Liceaga’ is a 28-year-old woman who suffered chest trauma and has been reported stable.

The Federal Health Minister explained that the General Hospital of Mexico, the Women’s Hospital, the Pediatrics Institute and the Perinatology Institute were instructed to receive patients since the time of the incident, in order to provide the required support to the Mexico City’s Ministry of Health, which is in charge of the Maternity and Children’s Hospital

Dr. Julieta Rojo, who is General Director of the National Blood Transfusion Center, emphasized that the Federal Ministry of Health will provide assistance by facilitating blood and plasma to the hospitals where the explosion victims have been hospitalized.

She added that the Centre is located in Othón de Mendizabal 195, colonia Zacatenco, Gustavo A. Madero and their telephone number is 51 19 46 20. Rojo concluded by calling the general population to visit the Centre and donate blood to help the injured.
