Researchers at the University Center of Arts, Architecture and Design (CUAAD) of the University of Guadalajara (UdeG), Mexico, designed a wheelchair from recycled plastic. This new mobility aid is more economical, flexible to the market, and can support up to 100 kilograms (220.5 pounds).
The researchers, led by the specialist in product development Luis Alberto Rosa Sierra, developed the wheelchair with more than 80 percent recycled plastic and metal parts for added durability.
Rosa Sierra said that the prototype was made from crushed waste plastic. The different wheelchair parts are shaped by filling molds with this plastic and applying pressure. Each piece is made separately, from the wheels to the back, and then they are joined with metal parts.
He said the plastic makes the chair more resistant, and can load up to 100 kilograms (220.5 pounds). He added that it is easy to clean and foldable, since the seat has hinges, making it easy to store.
According to the researchers, in many hospitals wheelchairs come from donations from large companies. However, high cost of repairs and maintenance results in the impossibility of using many of those chairs. So they decided to create a wheelchair easy and cheaply to maintain and repair.
Furthermore, Rosa Sierra explained that other reason for developing this chair is that the current models in the market for people in need do not dignify the user and can undermine their self-esteem.
He said that the prototype created, as it is made from recycled material, would be affordable; and estimates that its commercial price would fluctuate between 600 and 800 pesos (38 to 50 USD), if a company is interested in acquiring the patent.
He noted that they expected to have ready the wheelchair by next year to provide it to public hospitals.
